Stuttgart-Süd Travel Guide

Stuttgart
Stuttgart-Süd
Enjoy tea at the summit of a spiraling hill and look down on the Wilhelminian buildings and surrounding woodland from the tower-top viewing platform.

Just outside Stuttgart’s historic centre, Stuttgart-Süd contains some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Here, you’ll find a range of architectural gems, including a historic hospital, a towering church and a mausoleum. Embark on a guided walking tour of the area for a window into the rich history and Swabian cuisine.

Marking the neighbourhood’s heart is the Erwin-Schoettle-Platz, a square surrounded by impressive buildings. Enter St. Matthew’s Church at the southern end of the square and marvel at the white interior. Admire the arched stained-glass windows and the silver glow of the organ.

Next door stands the 19th-century St. Mary’s Hospital (Marienhospital). Snap photos of its neo-Renaissance building and study the sculpture of Mary with the Divine Child above the entrance portal.

Appreciate the Wilhelminian and art nouveau architecture as you wander through the streets of Stuttgart-Süd. Take a break at one of the breweries or international restaurants. On a rainy day, go for a swim in the Hallenbad Heslach indoor pool.

Check out the Benckendorff Mausoleum within the 18th-century Heslach Cemetery. The mausoleum was built by military general Konstantin von Benckendorff in memory of his wife.

For the best views of the district, ride the elevator to the top of Fernsehturm Tower. Dine in its restaurant or café, with a wonderful panorama of the surrounding woodland and urban sights. Near the tower is the Weißenburgpark, a scenic hill with a tea room where you can get snacks and drinks. Sit with your family at an outdoor table by a water feature on a sunny day.

The district covers a wide area just south of central Stuttgart. Take the U-Bahn to Marienplatz, Bihlplatz or Südheimer Platz or ride the funicular to Listraße or Pfaffenweg. See the attractions in the neighboring areas of Stuttgart-Mitte, Stuttgart-West and Möhringen.

The viewing tower and the glorious hospital are among the highlights that make Stuttgart-Süd stand out.
