Merano 2000 Cable Car (Meran 2000 Seilbahnen) is a thrilling 7-minute journey to the Tschögglbergerhof mountain plateau. Watch as the ancient rooftops of Merano disappear into the distance and marvel at the uninterrupted views of the pristine South Tyrol countryside. Complement your ride on the Merano 2000 Cable Car by having outdoor adventures at the family-friendly Merano 2000 Ski Area.
The cable car opened in 2010 and took just 10 months to build. Its architect, Roland Baldi, received the prestigious Iconic Award in the architecture category for his innovation and design. The smooth journey travels up to a height of 6,562 feet (2,000 metres). Each cabin has a capacity for 120 passengers, which means that waiting times are short even during peak periods.
Stand by the floor-to-ceiling windows and marvel as soaring mountain peaks and forest-clad valleys appear in all directions. On exceptionally clear days it’s possible to see across the border to Austria. Look back to get a bird’s-eye view of Merano’s historic town centre.
At the halfway point of the journey the cabins stop at the Mittelstation station. Here, a platform attaches to the cabin and creates a walkway that connects to a bridge suspended from a cliff face. Descend briefly to take photos of the views or continue to the cliff side of the bridge, from where you can set out along hiking trails.
The upper station is the gateway to the ski resort and hiking area. Have lunch at the station’s bistro while enjoying one of the best views of the Adige Valley. In the warm summer months, hike to lakes and viewpoints, go mountain biking and have fun bobsledding. Come in winter to explore miles of ski runs and cross-country trails, try tobogganing and practice your freestyle skills at a snow park.
Merano 2000 Cable Car is open from early May to November and from December to early April. Free parking is available at the lower station, which is a 10-minute drive from Merano’s town centre.
