Join locals who come to enjoy the lake and use the numerous sports courts and other restored facilities in this vast Victorian park.

Sports areas and a pavilion café bring people together at Burslem Park. Sculptures, mosaics and other works of art adorn the Victorian terrace garden and lake, which bring tranquility and grace to northern Stoke-on-Trent. Dress your kids in sportswear and bring balls, rackets and skating gear to the arenas.

Walk or cycle along the paved pathways that zigzag through the park. Admire the stylish bandstand and the circular redbrick fountain. The Crown Green bowling green encourages the continuation of a peaceful and traditional British sport. For a livelier game, play basketball, soccer or tennis in the courts and arenas. The low quarter pipe kinked grinder and grinding edge provide fun obstacles for skaters.

Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic at one of the designated areas near the lake. Saunter along the perimeter of the water and relish the tranquility in the area. Set kids free on the children’s playground and occasional fairground rides. See the Pulhamite rockery area and examine the terracotta features of the restored buildings.

Consider the unusual design of the Mayfly Sculpture by Andy Edwards and Philip Hardaker. Truly elevating the park’s artistry is the 10-foot (3-meter) Heritage Mosaic by artist Rob Turner. Notice how the design on its round face portrays historical figures and the buildings dotted around the park. Sit on a bench facing the mosaic and study the artwork or read a book.

The park dates back to 1894, when it was designed by architect Thomas Mawson. It is open to the public at all times and free to access. Check for occasional live music concerts held here.

Burslem Park skirts the eastern side of the Burslem district in northern Stoke-on-Trent. It is sandwiched between the Port Vale Football Club stadium and Stoke-on-Trent College. Arrive at Longport railway station and walk east for 1.4 miles (2.3 kilometers) to get here in about 30 minutes.
