The South Region of Brazil is known for its long stretches of sand, cosmopolitan cities and the world-famous Iguaçu Falls. It is among the most affluent and developed parts of the country, featuring three states heavily influenced by European culture. Travel through the area to get a sense of the different cultures in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná. 

The state of Paraná has Foz do Iguaçu, a small town containing its namesake set of waterfalls considered a wonder of the world. Explore the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu for different angles of the main waterfall. The park has a total of 275 cascades and an eclectic range of exotic wildlife and flora.

Travel east to the modern state capital of Curitiba. Stroll down its pleasant boulevards and relax in the parks and gardens. The city is often used as a base for exploring the Parque Estadual de Vila Velha and its range of misshapen and intriguing red rock formations. Take a train journey along spectacular cliff edges to reach the colonial town of Morretes.

Consider a change of scenery with a trip south to the state of Santa Catarina. Work on your tan in the hot summers on one of the countless beaches on Santa Catarina Island. Today, the historic city of Florianópolis is among the most popular beach resorts, with a fun and lively atmosphere.

The country’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul is characterized by flat pampas with cattle herders. Consider wine tours in Bento Gonçalves and relax in the large riverside city of Porto Alegre.
