For a sense of the local culture, visit the state capital of Curitiba. Relax in one of the many parks and learn about Italian immigration in the Santa Felicidade area. From the city centre, take a train through the Serra do Mar mountain range to the quaint colonial town of Morretes.
Note the undulating green hills and sprawling agricultural land as you make your way to Ponta Grossa. Hike through the nearby Parque Estadual de Vila Velha for its red rock formations and lakes. Visit the Parque Nacional dos Campos Gerais for the cascades and fascinating petroglyphs. Travel west to the Ukrainian-influenced town of Prudentópolis.
The highlight of the state is the magnificent Iguaçu Falls, an enormous waterfall consisting of around 275 chutes. Spend a couple of days trekking through the Argentine and Brazilian sides of the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu to encounter exotic wildlife and flora beside the incredible falls.
Stay in a hotel at the base of Foz do Iguaçu, which is also near the Paraguayan border. Admire the extraordinary engineering features of the large Itaipu Dam hydroelectric plant.
On the eastern side of the state are the many beaches and tropical islands, such as Ilha da Cotinga and Ilha do Mel in Paranaguá Bay. Stay in the resorts of Pontal do Paraná and Guaratuba for pristine beaches and clear water.
The state of Paraná is between São Paulo and Santa Catarina in the southeastern part of Brazil. It shares its western borders with both Argentina and Paraguay. Arrive at one of the international airports in Foz do Iguaçu or Curitiba and get around the state by long-haul bus or rent a car.
